albotas:

Cannon Announces EOS 650D / Rebel T4i Touchscreen DSLR. My Body Is Ready, My Wallet Is Not.

So, I’ve been thinking of a way to take Albotas to the next level. Back in the day, we used to do lots of cool video stuff, weekly shows, etc., but I sold all my old camera equipment, thus the shows ceased. I’d like to start them back up, but I want a decent camera to get the job done.

Lately I’ve had my eye on Cannon’s Rebel T3i (known outside of the U.S. as the 600D and in Japan as the EOS Kiss X5) since it does great video and is relatively cheap for a DSLR. I originally wanted a 5D Mk. II or the 7D, but those are both way out of my price range. The 60D was my next choice since it has video specs comparable to the 7D, but again, a bit more than I’d like to spend.

So I decided on the T3i. It takes great video and you can get one brand new starting at $750. The plan was to get it within the next two months, but now Cannon has announced its successor, the T4i.

God dammit, Canon.

The T4i basically fixes everything that the T3i had me sketched out about - mainly it’s shoddiness in low light the fact that digital zoom can be picked up in the audio. Not only that, but the T4i is touchscreen which makes changing settings way easier now that you can tweak it right on the screen without having to dig through as many menus like with the T3i.

There’s only one major bummer: The price. It’s $850 for the body alone with no lens. That’s $100 MORE than a T3i WITH a lens! The two new lens packages are tempting, but the price kind of hurts my feelings. There’s the $950 EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens package (Canon’s first EF pancake lens) which is nice and compact, but seems better suited to photographers, and the $1199 EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM package which has a Dynamic Image Stabilizer and a fast autofocus that you can override manually.

At those prices, I could just upgrade to the 60D, but I haven’t really compared the specs enough to know which would be better for video. I’ve never owned a DSLR before and I’m pretty dumb when it comes to the tech side of cameras. Anybody out there have advice?

Which would you recommend: The T3i, T4i, or 60D?

The Canon 650D looks really good.

My first camera was a Nikon 5700 and it had a swiveling, live-view, LCD screen which I miss a lot. You could take shots at ground level without laying on your stomach, and you didn’t have to invent a new yoga position to take shots at awkward angles. If they put one on the next 5D it will be the perfect camera.

Also: Did you know Canon just released the 5D mark III?! I just found out a couple days ago.

Which is both bad/good news because it means my 5D (Mark I) is even more out of date but it also means a new Canon Mark II is waaaay more affordable.
